Cutting Ownership Costs: More Efficient Dispatching


Streamline dispatching to reduce expenses.

One of the main hassles of managing any fleet is determining how to most effectively allocate assets. A challenge with smaller fleets, it can be a complete nightmare for fleet managers who oversee dozens or even hundreds of assets. In addition to requiring a lot of time and effort, inefficient dispatching also costs money.

The obvious solution to this problem is to streamline dispatching, but just how do you do that? Here are some ideas:

Improve communication

One of the root causes of suboptimal dispatching (and inefficiency in general) is poor communication. Project stakeholders don’t effectively communicate their needs, and it takes some time to learn how people work and what they expect out of you. Drill down to the basic requirements for each jobsite to ensure you’re not wasting time and money sending the wrong equipment. Staying up to date on project benchmarks will ensure you’re not sending equipment before it’s needed, where it will just be sitting around hurting your bottom line.

Learn to prioritize

Performing effective fleet triage is one of the most important skills a fleet manager can learn. Being able to effectively determine which calls need to be addressed immediately and which ones can be put off until later takes time and practice. Once you’ve mastered this skill, it will have a major positive impact on how you allocate your assets.

Route effectively

There’s an old adage that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. While this might be true in geometry, in the world of fleet management, it’s not always the case. Factors like traffic, road construction and even stoplights can dramatically impact how long it takes for equipment to reach the jobsite. Take these factors into account to find the best, fastest way for every asset to reach its intended destination.
