The Benefits of OEM-Agnostic Platforms

OEM agnostic

Why using one telematics platform across all manufacturers is a good idea

There’s an old adage that says you should always use the right tool for the job. This is fantastic advice — you wouldn’t try to drive a nail with a screwdriver, and it’s foolish to try to dig a foundation hole with a scissor lift. But when it comes to the telematics software you use along with your equipment, what is the right tool?

There are two schools of thought. The first promotes the platform provided by the manufacturer as the best tool for the job. And this can be a good choice. After all, it’s software specifically designed to work with that OEM’s equipment.

But what happens when your fleet is composed of machines from more than one manufacturer? Most fleet managers don’t have the luxury (or desire) to only work with one type of machine. And when you have a half-dozen or more brands on your lot, how do you manage the telematics data on all of them? How do you combine data from your blue, yellow and green iron all into one spot?

There’s the problem.

You can use the specific telematics solutions for each OEM, but they don’t communicate with one another. That means you’re trying to juggle three, four, seven windows at the same time, trying to get a clear picture of how your fleet is being used. If you’re a wiz with spreadsheets, maybe you can figure out some sort of jury-rigged solution that awkwardly aggregates your data into a spreadsheet, but that’s a difficult path. For one thing, if you can get it to work at all, it’s probably going to be missing important data. It’s also an extremely labor-intensive process to import the data.

What you really need is an OEM-agnostic telematics solution.

Here’s why it’s important to have a telematics platform that works with all your equipment, regardless of who manufactured it.

1. Ease of use — This was discussed above. Reducing the number of windows you have to work in to get a clear picture of asset utilization makes fleet management so much easier.

2. Accuracy — When all your asset data is compiled into one platform you get an exact apples-to-apples comparison of everything. You don’t have to worry about mistakes in transferring data or reading reports incorrectly — it’s all in one place.

3. Total fleet reporting — Don’t spend hours compiling data into single reports. Using an OEM-agnostic platform gathers reports for your entire fleet in one location.

4. Cost-effectiveness — Most telematics platforms come with a subscription fee. Instead of paying a separate fee for each platform, it’s less expensive (and easier on your accounting staff) to pay for one platform that works with every machine.

EquipmentShare Track gives you the functionality you need in one platform.

When it comes to managing your entire fleet, regardless of OEM, there’s really only one choice — Track. From real-time monitoring to predictive maintenance alerts, geofences to utilization statistics, it has everything you need to easily manage your assets more effectively.
